Acceptance of nem members

The Verein der Kanalsteurer e.V. (Canal Helmsmen's Association) is tasked with manning vessels on their passage through the Kiel-Canal with canal helmsmen in order to guarantee safe passage.

Acceptance of new members and the number of canal helmsmen aspirants to be accepted are calculated pursuant to a formula. Summation occurs biannually on January 2 and July 2 of each year.

The need for the acceptance of new members in the Verein der Kanalsteurer e.V. depends on the number of vessels on the Kiel-Canal. Acceptance of new members generally occurs by election. Elected aspirants are then being trained on board the vessels and within the association “Verein der Kanalsteurer e.V”.
